Antigua Ablaze: Hike and Camp an Active Volcano

About This Experience
Long after the candles flicker out in Antigua's cobblestone plazas, the sky above the city tells a different story — a slow, glowing pulse on the horizon where Volcán de Fuego breathes fire into the night. This is Guatemala at its most elemental: colonial calm at your doorstep, raw geological theater on the skyline, and a chance to walk straight into the middle of it.
Your basecamp is Antigua, where you will choose your accommodations from a series of hotels and resorts. Wander down to one of two restaurants for regional cuisine or unwind with a Thai-inspired massage at your resort's spa, or float in the outdoor pool with the silhouette of Agua rising behind you.
Then comes the climb. With one of Antigua's longest-running adventure outfitters, you and your partner will choose your own kind of fire. Spend a night in a sustainably built refuge hut on Acatenango, the third-highest volcano in Central America, and watch Fuego's eruptions light the clouds beneath you. Or pitch a tent under the stars on Pacaya, ringed by sunrise mist. Adrenaline-seekers can take on the descent into the saddle between Acatenango and Fuego to get as close as safety allows to a living, roaring crater.
For longer stays, Meridian may offer an extension option to stay at resorts along the Pacific's shores near Chulamar — oceanfront balconies, beachfront bars, and the kind of sunsets that earn their own applause.
